We booked this tour specifically because we wanted to ensure that the economic benefits of tourism directly reached the residents of the Township—and we believe this tour achieved exactly that. The experience was different from what we had initially expected. I had anticipated a small group walking tour, perhaps followed by a meal at a local restaurant. Instead, we were a very small group—just the two of us, our driver, and our guide. The heart of the tour involved visiting three separate families in their homes, where we were warmly welcomed right into their living rooms. This setup gave us a unique opportunity to speak directly with the residents, gaining invaluable, firsthand insights into their daily lives and challenges—perspectives you simply don't get at typical tourist hotspots. This tour not only provides essential work for the residents but offers a genuine view of how and where people live. It was profoundly enriching. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone; it enriches not only yourself but genuinely makes the world a little better. The meal was also hosted privately in a family's living room. We were served Pap, chicken, and vegetables. Vegetarians should note that the hosts are very accommodating—simply mention you do not eat chicken, and you will be well catered for. The food was delicious, easy to digest, and mildly spiced. It genuinely felt like being invited for dinner at a friend's house. During the meal, we also learned a lot about local languages, including a brief introduction to the fascinating click sounds. If you wish to be well-prepared, carrying small cash tips for the families you visit is a wonderful idea. It is certainly not expected, but it was a pleasure for us to give back to these wonderful, welcoming people after learning so much. We left feeling that we had contributed something valuable in return for their incredible hospitality.

A fascinating, essential trip that really educatesSia, our tour guide, from the moment he picked us up (bang on time!) from our hotel to when we were dropped off provided educating, energetic and thoroughly interesting information with a real warmth and a sense of wanting to ensure we all learned from this trip. He, and our guide in the Townships, made sure we were safe and the walking tour parts were eye opening. The highlight was perhaps the church service (we did the tour on a Sunday and attended part of the Methodist church service) but there were so many elements of this half day tour that we will take away with us. It could perhaps seem ghoulish or insensitive to go there, but it is really important to help with an understanding of what has happened here, historically and socially. You will find friendliness, knowledgeable and open people and you're bound to learn something. What makes this so amazing is the personal stories of your guides, which will touch you, and their honest, open approach.
