Cheetah Encounter Half Day

Today, there are only an estimated 7,100 cheetahs left in the wild. The primary reason for the cheetah’s decline is shrinking range due to habitat loss throughout Africa. Drastic increases in human population and proliferation of domestic animals has led to loss of habitat and prey, and increasing conflict with man There are about 1,326 cheetahs in South Africa, including 412 in Kruger NP, 80 in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, 334 in small fenced parks and private reserves, and about 500 free ranging cheetahs on farmlands in the northern part of the country.

Cheetah Outreach

Approximately 40 minutes outside of Cape Town, guests will experience the Cheetah Outreach Programme by visiting the Visitor Centre followed by a tour of their facilities. You will see Anatolian ambassador dogs and our small carnivores, then climb the viewing platform to see ambassador cheetahs and the enclosure where they run the cheetahs twice a week. An explanation will be given about the ambassador cheetah and Anatolian livestock guarding dog programmes, how they run the cats, provide information about small carnivore species and why they are at Cheetah Outreach.

Cheetah Encounter

A structured protocol for both adult and cub encounters that insures the safety of our guests and the comfort of our animals. Only 4 guests are allowed in with a cat at one time and must be accompanied by a volunteer who stays with them at all times and takes photos for them. Our adult cheetahs and cubs over 6 months of age always wear a collar and are held by a lead by a handler the animal knows well and trusts. Guests are only allowed in with an adult cheetah if it is lying on the ground or sitting up, and relaxed, willing to be stroked.
